A CAVE-IN at a residential area in Futian District has been blamed on the soft soil.
The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway contractor released an investigation report Monday, showing the soil under the Zhongkang residential area in Xiameilin had eroded when a drilling machine was operating in a tunnel 30 meters underground.
The cave-in at a sports ground Sunday morning was about 7-8 meters deep and 3 meters in diameter.
More than 60 apartments in nearby buildings were evacuated after the incident.
Cracks could be seen in some apartments, according to a resident named Zhang.
The contractor said it was now checking the area twice an hour instead of three times a day.
Some residents had moved into hotels with the contractor paying the hotel bill. The contractor said they would cover all expenses incurred and invite a third party to conduct safety appraisals.
