LOCAL residents had photographed and reported 2,436 traffic offenses such as illegally changing lanes in six days after the traffic police initiated a campaign to curb traffic offenses.
Of the total, 1,827 were sent through MMS to 106-5022-2002-222 service platform and another 609 photos were e-mailed to traffic authorities, police said Thursday. But only 594 photos, or one quarter, met the requirements and police had punished the offenders.
Police launched the campaign March 25 to tackle illegally changing lanes by encouraging residents to photograph incidents.
Most photos were of illegal parking, accounting for 1,145, or nearly half the total violations. But police said reporting such violation is not included in the campaign. There were 770 reports of illegally changing lanes, one third of the total, followed by illegally occupying emergency lanes or illegal u-turns. Offenders were often seen on Caitian, Xinzhou, Beihuan, Binhe, Shawan and Shenhui roads.
The new measures had greatly reduced traffic congestion during rush hours.
Police received 359 reports of traffic congestions between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. during March 23-29, a decrease of about 10 percent compared with the same period in the previous week. The reports dropped by 38 percent during the evening rush hour between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Police reminded residents to clearly caption the location and time of offenses with the photos. The photos should clearly show the violations.
