A TOTAL of 200 book corners will be installed in communities throughout the city this year, providing book sales, charity activities and information for residents.
The first 10 book corners have been installed in downtown communities, such as Lianhuaercun housing estate in Futian District, said Zhou Ning, vice general manager of the Shenzhen Haitian Publishing House, which is the sponsor of the program.
The book corner, called One-meter Sunshine Haitian Book Corner, is the first in the country, aiming to create a convenient platform for community residents to buy and read books. It would gradually become a consultation center, providing the latest information on politics, economics and culture, Thursday s Nanfang Daily reported.
The book corner would also stage public activities with property management companies and government departments, such as Universiade promotions conducted by the city. In the future, it may also collect public donations and provide jobs for the unemployed.
One corner would occupy about 6 square meters. Each could provide one or two jobs and total cost of the first 200 corners would be about 10 million yuan, Zhou said.
The company planned to build 300 to 600 corners throughout the city over the next three years. (Wang Yuanyuan)
