THE Web site of the provincial traffic police bureau was swamped Tuesday as car owners vied for 50,000 registration plate numbers.
Tuesday was the first day of the allocation of registration plate numbers online, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
However, the large number of applicants led to continual jamming of the Web site.
I started trying to log on to the Web site from 8 o clock Tuesday morning but could not get access until noon, a resident, Zhang, was quoted as telling the Daily.
Most people were keen to obtain auspicious car plates, according to the city traffic police bureau.
The bureau said the blind pursuit of lucky numbers was a waste of time because it was meaningless superstition.
