Taiwan garment sector presses accord

Despite current political difficulties on Taiwan, the island's garment manufacturers continue to press the Ma administration for completion of a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) with the mainland as quickly as possible, a garment makers leader said Friday.

The Chairman of the Taiwan Garment Industry Association (TGIA), Laurence Tsai, told reporters local industries should take the initiative to cooperate and exchange opinions with their mainland counterparts to facilitate government efforts to conclude the CECA.

Tsai remarks that leading garment manufacturers have cooperated with their mainland counterparts all the way back to 1992.

"Taiwan's garment industry signed a memorandum of cooperation with the China Textile Industry Association Dec 12," said Tsai.

The memorandum concerns cooperation in areas of technological innovation, brand development, and trade, explained Tsai. He suggested other local industries should follow TGIA's model so as to pave the road for the signing of a CECA with the mainland.

"Since the signing of a complex agreement like the CECA requires a long process of discussion, evaluation, and negotiation between the two sides, Taiwan's industries should aggressively seek closer cooperation and communication to help accelerate the process," urged Tsai.
