I.T

With locations in posh mall Season's Place and the China World Shopping Mall, I.T is bringing hip, urban designers to a world filled with Coach handbags and Prada sunglasses. The store's hardwood floors and white fixtures complement contemporary brands, including Isabel Marant and Dior Homme. Adjacent to the store are Comme des Garcons and Martin Margiela boutiques, both operated by I.T.

Gu Ba

This is the bargain basement for Beijing fashionistas. Sometimes, you'll find 3.1 Phillip Lim, BCBG, Marni and Catherine Malandrino. Other times, it's a dry well. So be prepared to dig through crowded racks. "I'll find interesting stuff two out of five trips," says Christine Low, a Beijing fashion show director. "You need to be patient." Low says to look out for pieces from under-the-radar, local designers as well.

Dashanzi 798 Art District

China's contemporary art scene thrives in this district, where collectors can purchase original pieces from Xu Yong--a favorite of the first President Bush--and Bai Yulio. For bibliophiles, there's an art and design-centric bookstore in the area's performance and exhibition space.

Shanghai Tang

Founded in 1994, Shanghai Tang touts itself as China's only luxury brand. Although you can find the label worldwide, the Beijing flagship store is still worth a trip for those in search of reasonably priced, well-made clothing. You'll find oriental-inspired dresses, suits and accessories, as well as a ready-to-wear collection that veers toward a more western silhouette.

Address: B1 Grand Hyatt Hotel, 1 Dong Chang’an Jie, Centre

Panjiayuan Market

Avoid the silk market--it's a tourist trap--but if you like kitchy knick knacks, head down to this flea market in southeast Beijing. The booths are stocked with Chinese antiques, replicas and crafts such as jade jewelry, stone dinnerware and Chinese chess sets.
