USA would like to make agreement with China on cotton subsidies

Write: Clarence [2011-05-20]

Mark Keenum, the undersecretary of U.S. Agriculture Department, said there was a problem had not been resolved in the Geneva negotiations. That is just the cotton subsidies.

Keenum said he would like to cooperate with other countries to discuss the problem that cotton subsidy in America is too high, as long as China allows more U.S. cotton to enter China market steadily. That’s because China is the first large market of U.S. cotton exports.

He said they prepare to talk over the resolvent of U.S. cotton subsidies if they see the big melioration of China cotton imports.

There are 50 percents of export cotton enter China market. Therefore, the United States will be affected when China make an arbitrary decision on cotton imports. China factitiously controls the tariffs to protect domestic cotton growers. Keenum said:” American negotiator had made several contacts with Chinese officials in the last two weeks. But we have no idea to persuade them to accept a reasonable market access proposal.”
