Hong Kong : The China Trade Syndrome

Write: Jamison [2011-05-20]
“Europe’s political leaders are bracing themselves for big news about global competition over China.” This is according to The Economist in its 6th October edition.
“Private equity firms, lured by luxury brands global sales of more than L100 billion a year and sometimes triple-digit growth rates in major world economies, are ready to spend vast sums on luxury goods brands,” wrote the International Herald Tribune on 28th September.
The apparel industry is again hitting the headlines as the European quota deal with China is reaching its expiry date; the Americans will be watching closely to see how this affects their outsourcing business, bearing in mind that their deal with China expires at the end of 2008.
The Europeans have just formed the first collective and exclusive voice for retail clothing brands in Europe - a coalition of 50 retail clothing brands employing over 85,000 people in Europe - The European Branded Clothing Alliance (EBCA).
The global apparel industry is facing unparalleled changes and issues, which will be discussed and analysed during the next edition of the Prime Source Forum to be held in Hong Kong next April under the theme “CHANGE - Challenges and Solutions”. Some 500 movers and shakers from around 30 countries involved in this global industry will meet and discuss the issues they face in the years ahead.
