China : Our toys meet standards in most countries - Li Chang

Li Chang Jiang, Secretary of General Administration of Quality Supervision, recently revealed that the company Mattel US recalled 20.2 million of Chinese homemade toys, among which 85 percent was designed and produced in accordance with the requirements of importers in the US.
According to Li Chang Jiang, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, US recently announced that Mattel recalled a total of 20.2 million of Chinese made toys for several times in the US and worldwide markets. Of these, 85 percent was designed and produced in accordance with the requirements of importers in the US, only 15 percent was not consistent with the lead content requirement.
Li Chang Jiang said, China's total toy exports to the world reached 22 billion in 2006. This shows that China's toys are in line with the security standards of the majority of importing countries, and are welcomed by children in the world.
According to the data of National Bureau of Statistics, in the first half of this year, China's exports increased 27.6 percent, totaling US $546.7 billion. Of these, exports to the US grew 17.8 percent, that to the EU gained 30.2 percent, to Japan rose 11.3 percent and exports to ASEAN countries increased by 32.8 percent.
Since September, ‘Management regulations on recalled children's toys’, issued by the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, was in formal implementation.
Vice Minister Gao Hu Cheng of Commerce of Ministry, said in June of this year, American companies massively recalled more than 21 million China-made toys, among them, only 3 million toys had the problem with over-standards of lead content in dope and paint, accounting for 14 percent of the recalled quantity. The remaining 18.2 million toys were voluntarily recalled by dealers. These toys were mainly produced and sold before 2007 in accordance with American Toy Standards.

China is the world's largest exporter of toys, China's exports account for about 60 percent of global export volume.
According to the data by Chinese Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of light industry and handicrafts, toy exports reached $7.086 billion in 2006. Toy imports of the US for the same year amounted to $9.796 billion, of which direct imports from China marked $3.233 billion, accounting for about 33 percent. Total toy imports by EU registered $6.196 billion, of which direct imports from China were $1.541 billion accounting for 24.87 percent.
