China : Denim industry seeks standard brand image

In 1979, a businessman from Hong Kong brought back an investment of 100,000 HK dollars and more than 40 sets of used sewing machines to his hometown, setting up denim garment factory for processing and compensation trades.
After more than 20 years, the town's textile and garment industrial output has reached 10.9 billion yuan, export value exceeds US $400 million.Denim clothing enterprises and related supporting enterprises are more than 2,600, and 80,000 people from other places are engaged in denim garment production. This is the past and the present of Xin Town, Guangzhou.
Another small town is Jun An houses more than 1000 textile and garment manufacturing enterprises and related supporting processing project. Over 95 percent of these enterprises mainly produce denim garments. Annual output comes up to more than 80 million pieces, employing more than 90,000 industrial workers with output value over 3 billion yuan and export share up to 80 percent.
Jun An Town and Xin Town are like twin stars showing the booming of Chinese denim industry.
Guangzhou costume designer Li Jihai, executive vice president of the association, said, ‘We can only make a miserable 0.5 Yuan from the export of one piece of denim garment, while international fashion giants can earn over $5 from the same garment by only sticking their own labels on the product.
