China : More anti-dumping investigations coming this year

Many countries are approaching WTO to protect their interests, which are harmed by the advantage China has due to its inexpensive labour.

EU is struggling to protect its markets from cheap textile and agriculture products of China, so it may place more anti-dumping investigations on the country this year. Chinese exports are giving intense competition to European countries.

EU imposed anti-dumping taxes on local shoes and sneakers in October, against which China warned of legal action.

EU applied two year levies on Chinese and Vietnamese footwear which were worth 9.7 billion euros (US$12.38 billion). It applied taxes on 9 local products in 2005, while this year it has imposed duties on 5 types of local products.

Anti-dumping duties help to curb advantages obtained by the country for any industry.

EU placed 8 inquiries into Chinese exports in first 9 months this year, which equates total investigations of last year.

WTO stated that China faced 469 anti-dumping inquiries by its members in last 11 years. India placed maximum investigations, followed by US and EU. Total 338 anti-dumping taxes were imposed on Chinese exports in this period.

As the country s industries provide much competition due to inexpensive labour, it is the prime focus of anti-dumping action.

From 1997, China also placed anti-dumping investigations on mainly the US and also Japan and South Korea, with 123 inquiries between 2000 and 2005.
