In June 2006, the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods both showed year-on-year increases. The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released (July 25) the external merchandise trade statistics for June 2006.
In June 2006, the value of total exports of goods (comprising re-exports and domestic exports) increased by 6.7 percent over a year earlier to $202.2 billion, after a year-on-year decrease of 0.1 percent in May. Within this total, the value of re-exports increased by 6.2 percent to $190.4 billion in June, while the value of domestic exports increased by 16.5 percent to $11.8 billion.
For the first half of 2006 as a whole, the value of total exports of goods rose by 8.5 percent over the same period in 2005. Within this total, the value of re-exports increased by 7.5 percent, while the value of domestic exports increased by 28.6 percent.
Comparing the second quarter of 2006 with the preceding quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis, the value of total exports of goods decreased by 1.0 percent.
Analysis by country/territory:
Comparing June 2006 with June 2005, increases were registered in the values of re-exports to some major destinations, in particular Korea (+13.5 percent) and the mainland of China (the Mainland) (+10.1 percent).
However, decreases were registered in the values of re-exports to the Netherlands (-18.7 percent), France (-4.4 percent) and the United Kingdom (-4.2 percent). Concurrently, significant increases were registered in the values of domestic exports to many major destinations, in particular Italy (+347.6 percent), the United Kingdom (+205.4 percent), Germany (+180.3 percent) and the Netherlands (+158.9 percent). However, a decrease was registered in the value of domestic exports to Taiwan (-28.8 percent).

Analysis by major commodity:
Comparing June 2006 with June 2005, increases were registered in the values of re-exports of many principal commodity divisions, in particular "electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof" (by $6.8 billion or 18.4 percent) and decrease was registered in the value of re-exports of "clothing" (by $1.1 billion or 7.2 percent).
For the first half of 2006 as a whole, year-on-year increases were registered in the values of re-exports of many principal commodity divisions, in particular, a year-on-year decrease was registered in the value of re-exports of "clothing" (by $8.0 billion or 10.5 percent).
