Chinese footwear companies invest $80mn in East Java

About nine footwear manufacturers have set up factories in East Java incurring US $80 million, industry sources reported.
These relocations were effected to circumvent new anti-dumping duties imposed by the European Union on footwear products originating from China and Vietnam, stated Eddy Widjanarko, Chairman, Indonesian Footwear Association (Aprisindo).
It will generate 20,000 jobs, he added.
Eddy informed that 15 foreign investors are planning a visit Indonesia in July for tying up business partnerships.
The European Union imposed anti-dumping duty of 25 percent on China and Vietnam-made footwear and leather products in May.
Foreign companies preferred Indonesia for relocation as the EU had relaxed tariff barriers to Indonesian-made footwear products and import duty was cut to 14 percent from the present 17 percent, communicated Nugraha Sukmajaya, Director for Miscellaneous Industries.
A 20 percent increase in exports of footwear is being targeted by Government this year to US $2 billion, up from $1.5 billion the previous year.
