Guangdong Import Surged During Jan.-Feb.Period

Guangdong port has seen a surge in cotton import during the first two month in 2006. Total import registered 31,000 tons, up 81.8% from year ago level. Import value doubled to reach 40.28 mil USD.

According to statistics, general trade totaled 14,000 tons, 88.6% higher than year ago level and accounted for 46.4% of total import. Processing trade amounted 11,000 tons, 22.5% higher year on year and accounted for 34.5%. Delivery at the port warehouse totaled 5870 tons, 7.5 times higher than year ago level and represent 19.1% of the import.

U.S., Australia and India were the top three supplier with amount totalling 13,000, 5,055 and 2,455 tons respectively. Gross import from these three countries accounted for 65.9% of the import.

Analysts pointed out the large increase of cotton import as mainly due to an expanded supply deficit and exporters aggressive move in cotton shipment ahead of Step2 termination
