China National Petroleum Corporation's one million ton/year plant of paraxylene (PX) has been approved by National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

The total cost of this project is estimated RMB3.867 billion at Urumqi Petrochemical Complex.

Supply of PX from Urumai Petrochemical Complex will increase from 80,000 ton/year to 1 million ton/year on completion of the first phase of project which also includes a 1.5 million ton/year PTA plant.

Second-phase units will include downstream products like phenol, acetone, caprolactam, and aniline, while production of maleic anhydride and polycarbonate production is in the pipeline.

First-phase construction is to start in April 2007 and will be finished by end-2008; it will use foreign process technology but local tools will also find place wherever necessary.
