Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association Chairman Mohsin Ayub Mirza has requested the government to impose a ban on export of yarn for two to three months to compensate for the additional quantity exported during the last five months.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mirza criticised lack of decision on devising a mechanism for availability of yarn to the value added textile sector and no restriction on export of yarn.

He said the government, which came to power on promises of providing jobs, was ignoring the fate of over two million jobs in the value added sector which were in jeopardy due to shortage of yarn.

Mirza, who is a leading readymade garment exporter, said the already suffering exporters were being forced to pay increasing charges of electricity and gas after every few months which was hurting their competitiveness.

The benefit given to the industry in the form of duty drawback was like giving them an umbrella during rain while their shoes were leaking, he added.

He said increase in power and gas charges from January was totally unacceptable and suggested that the entire industry should protest against it.
