Belgium: EU's Four Remedies to Heal Textile Wounds

Write: Challis [2011-05-20]

European Union (EU) has drafted a new policy to support afflicted clothes and textiles industry of 25 ?nation bloc.

Gunter Verheugen, Industry and Enterprise Commissioner of the EU, said that textile industry is challenged with unfair market conditions, job losses and slower recovery.

The effect of developments of last few years has damaged each and every section of textiles and clothing production, from spinning and weaving to garment make-up, said Verheugen.

He explained a four-point plan, which includes better access to third-nation markets for EU companies, abolition of non-tariff barriers within the framework of ongoing WTO talks, strict implementation of intellectual property rules and rapid completion of the Euro-Mediterranean zone.

He also recommended other proposals like Competitiveness and Innovation Program to increase competitiveness.
