The growth of garment export is expected to be double or triple due to the forthcoming US NTR(MFN). Vietnam need to import a lot of fabric, yarn and accessories. Moreover, the suppliers are not enough that can only meet 20%-30% of fabric needs of the industry. Hence, great opportunities are shown in the sector for the fast development.
Local and Joint Venture fabric manufacturers can only supply limited high quality fabric. Fabric import is the most convenient and effective way for garment manufactures to meet the buyers?quality and tight delivery schedules. Import tax for future export is waived(normally 40% for fabrc and 20% for yarn) and eventually the price may even be cheaper than local made fabric.
The demand of high yarn coount fabric is also signficant. Vietnam fabric manufacturers can import high yarn count yarn for local fabric market, but the import tax of yarn (20%) still cannot be avoided. Thus the cost of local made fabric with import yarn is 20% higher than those fabric imported from abroad in terms of processing and re-exporting.
The import of kintted fabric is highly studied by those garment manufacturers who plan to enter the US market(knitted fabric is need with giant quantity than that of weaving fabric). As soon as th NTR between Vietnam and USA is approved by the US congress; the free quota to USA; the lack of knitted fabric supply in Vietnam local market; all these essential factors will be the golden opportunities for the overseas fabric manufacturers.
