Calderon, the president of Mexican, expressed he would still support the implementation of anti-dumping measures on Chinese textiles on Mar.28th. He considered domestic garment industry is facing the unfair competition from the Asian Titan—China. “My government has sought consultations with the Chinese government to resolve the many doubts on textile imports”, he said, “I am willing to take all measures to check the trade-distorting subsidies.” On the annual meeting of Mexico Textile Trade Association, Calderon said that the Mexican government's position had been very clear in supporting for the international competition, but not unfair competition. That’s why the Mexican government insisted on the implementation of compensatory amount on Chinese textiles.

One year ago, Mexican government made the five-year extension of the tariffs aimed at a majority of Chinese garments and synthetic fiber, and these tariffs come into effect from 2004. However, these tariffs will expire on December 11. Since China joined into WTO in 2001, Mexico had been imposing these tariffs on Chinese products. Unless continue to retain the rules of tariffs are consistent with WTO, Mexico could not extend these tariffs.

Mexican President Calderon who took up an appointment in December said that the government would work together with the textile industry and set up an extension of the tariff "solid case." Finance Minister Eduardo Sojo said last week that the government is cooperating with 18 industries which all impose tariffs on Chinese products.

Recently trade friction occur between Mexico and China, besides, China surpassed Mexico to become the second largest trade partner of America last year. A senior official said last week that Mexican government planed to request WTO to establish a dispute settlement panel aimed at China's export subsidies after they failed in consulting with China. America rebuked China that they instituted several non-equity policy to support export and domestic production, and Mexico stood at the same front with America last month.
