Taiwan : Annual wool top imports decline strongly

Write: Sorano [2011-05-20]
Taiwan's wool textile industry reported yet another disappointing set of results during the final quarter of 2006.
Australia's 5th largest customer for greasy wool saw January-December 2006 imports of raw wool (almost entirely of greasy Australian origin) solidly lower.
Taiwan's annual wool top imports declined more strongly, with imports from China accounting for almost half by volume. It is estimated that around 60% of Taiwan's total wool top imports are of Australian wool origin, regardless of the supplier country.
Wool top is Taiwan's principal wool product export and recorded further weakening in the face of stiff competition from combers in China, particularly to Taiwan's major market of South Korea.
With the decline of orders from South Korean spinners Taiwan's wool combing industry is becoming increasingly reliant on orders from Japanese spinners. Japan has become Taiwan's major buyer of wool top.
