China : Fabric export to Benin up 73%

China's fabric export to Benin increased by 73 percent in the five months starting January this year. This is a significant development considering that in 2002, the Benin Government had banned shops from selling goods made from Chinese fabric due to low-price competition and illegal marketing.
However, joint efforts taken by Chinese fabric exporters, Chinese Textile and Clothing Industry Association and the Government of Benin had gradually stabilized China's fabric export to Benin.
Of the 73 percent growth in 2007, the export category has seen a shift from jacquard-weave cloth to wax printing cloth. But this could again spell trouble for Chinese exporters as dealers in Benin and its neighbouring countries have a monopoly in merchandising wax printing cloth.
Such a scenario may result in massive trade friction that may cause heavy losses to Chinese fabric export enterprises. Chinese Textile and Clothing Industry Association reminded fabric exporters to pay attention to this matter.
