Garment Exports to the US Hit $2 Billion for the Year

HA NOI ?Viet Nam has so far this year earned US$2 billion in garment exports to the US, reported the Investment and Planning Department under the Ministry of Trade.

In the first nine months of this year, the average price of Vietnamese garment categories which are exported to the US, dropped 3.6 per cent compared to last year? corresponding period, the department said.

Government to set up energy regulatory authority

HA NOI ?The Prime Minister issued a decision on Wednesday on the establishment of Electricity Regulatory Authority of Viet Nam (ERAV).

Decision 258/2005/QD-TTg stipulates functions, tasks and responsibilities as well as organisation mechanisms of the ERAV.

Under the decision, the ERAV? tasks are to regulate the electricity market, and build the nation? electricity development plan in a way that enhances the efficiency of electricity supply.

The ERAV is also in charge of issuing rules on competition to ensure transparent competitiveness among market entities.

Czech-Viet Nam co-operation centre to open

HA NOI ?The Viet Nam Consulting for Infrastructure Development Company and the Czech Winter Management and Consulting Company have signed an agreement to build an economic co-operation development centre to promote trade between the two countries.

The centre will provide a venue for business consultations concerning law, policy, technical and economic issues, and will allow enterprises to seek opportunities and promote mutual investment and trade.

The centre will support businesses and joint ventures in Viet Nam and the Czech Republic in setting up transaction and representative offices, and will provide areas to showcase trade products.

Tien Giang Foodstuffs Co exceeds 2005 export target

TIEN GIANG ?The Tien Giang Foodstuffs Company in the southern province of Tien Giang exported more than 256,000 tonnes of rice in the last nine months, exceeding its 2005 target by two per cent.

The above-average performance was attributed to the company? investment of US$819,200 in new materials, new rice varieties, and fertiliser provided to provincial co-operatives over the last 10 years.

Twelve firms awarded Gold Cup at industrial fair

HA NOI ?Twelve businesses were presented with "Gold Cups" for outstanding performance at the opening ceremony of the Viet Nam International Industry Fair (VIIF 2005) in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

The businesses include the Ha Noi Enamelled Tile Company, Viglacera Floating Glass Company, Tam Diep Cement Company.

In addition, the fair? organiser conferred the Gold Medal for high-quality goods on 58 products made in Viet Nam.

Industrial zone to be built around Kon Tum pulp mill

KON TUM ?The area planned for the Kon Tum Pulp Mill in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum will be turned into an industrial zone, following the Prime Minister? request.

The US$3 million Kon Tum Pulp factory was built in 2000 and operation was halted in September 2004 when the government deemed the project impractical.
