Turkish Apparel and Textile Exports under Perform

Write: Dervla [2011-05-20]

The value of Turkish apparel and textile exports slid 3.6 per cent in the month of October, according to data from the TIM Exporters' Union.

Fibre and textile shipments fell 4.83 per cent whilst apparel dropped 4.5 per cent compared to October last year.

A 23 per cent increase in carpet exports helped reduce the overall damage.

The fall in October output appears to be part of a general trend of under performance in industrial production according to a Reuters poll of economists.

Textile and apparel are the largest under performers dragging their feet in the presence of Chinese competition.

The year to date figures still show an overall increase of 6.83 per cent in the value shipments compared to the same period one year earlier but is being reduced due to falling sales.

Big earners such as HS categories 62 and 63 (non-knitted apparel and made-up textiles) suffered a 6 and 4 per cent fall compared to October 2004.

Knitted apparel in HS 61 grew by a slight 1.5 per cent, less than the 5.43 per cent increase for the year to October.

The scenario is bad for apparel where exports are at a low 85.20 compared to 100 for the year of 1997.

Textile exports for October are also at a low 89.20 using the same index rate.

Apparel imports into Pakistan from Turkey have given some good news to the industry, however.

Shipments to Pakistan were up to US$258 million from US$35 million during the last six months.

Bilateral trade between the two countries has also increased by 20 per cent with textiles and apparel forming an important part of trade.

Turkish companies such as Sanko Holding, Menderes Tekstil and Cetinkaya, meanwhile, have recently begun moving some operations to Uzbekistan.

Sayhantohur, the first Turkish textile company to set-up premises in Uzbekistan, exports around 250,000 items of apparel per month to the US.

Menderes Tekstil, has also decided to close its Bulgarian subsidiary in order to commence operations in Southern Turkey.
