One small step for a luxury brand, one giant step for shoe lovers in Hong Kong. Italian high-end footwear and accessory brand Sergio Rossi opened its first flagship store here on Friday with an exclusive party held at Cuisine Cuisine, followed by the ribbon cutting at Pacific Place.

Among the guests in the party were celebrities and artists including 2004 Miss Hong Kong Kate Tsui, TV presenter and writer Wong Yee-hing and celebrity Helen Rong.

While tucking into the free flow of champagne and fingerfood at the party, guests previewed the Spring/Summer 2008 Collection of Sergio Rossi, presented by some of the top models in town, including Gaile Lo and Lynn Hung.

"The beauty of a shoe is in how it transforms a woman's leg," said the brand's creative director, Edmundo Castillo. "Instead of just covering the foot, it should take on a life of its own and change people's silhouette and attitude."

He designs, he said, for the modern, contemporary and sexy woman.

The Puerto Rico-born designer was educated at the Altos de Chavon School of Design in the Dominican Republic.

He began his career in design in New York, where he developed a profound passion for shoes, working his way up towards senior designing positions at some established fashion brands, including Polo Ralph Lauren and DKNY.

Later, he later set up his own brand to design women's shoes in 1999. In 2005, he joined Sergio Rossi as their senior designer director for the team on women's footwear, bringing to the brand an array of sunny colors and a taste for textures that flatter both the eye and the touch.

For the Spring/Summer 2008 Collection, Castillo was inspired by the warm colors of the Earth and sea through a variety of tones like passion red, sea blue and lagoon green.

The bright colors of the line is complemented by Sergio Rossi's Made-to- Order 22K Gold Croco Collection: a sandal and two pumps with delicate craftsmanship applied on precious crocodile leather covered in 22-carat gold laminate.

The metallic collection is made exclusively to order.

Established in the 1950s in San Mauro Pascoli in Italy, Sergio Rossi has always been a favorite with numerous Italian and international stars on the red carpet and other gala events.

In 1999, the brand was acquired by the Gucci Group. More shops were opened in cities such as London, Tokyo and Paris.
