Macau: Clothing & Footwear Cost Up in TPI, Q4 2005

Macau Statistics and Census Service released the Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the fourth quarter of 2005. The TPI of Q4 was 111.43, up by 3.12 percent over the previous quarter.

Due to higher prices in hotel accommodation, in jewellery that was influenced by rising gold prices, as well as in Winter clothing and footwear, indices of Accommodation; Miscellaneous goods; and Clothing and footwear rose by 10.91 percent, 6.26 percent and 2.26 percent respectively.

On the other hand, Transport and communications was the only section that recorded a slight decrease (-0.01 percent) in the index.

Compared with the fourth quarter of 2004, TPI rose by 2.83 percent in this quarter. In 2005, the annual average TPI increased by 2.89 percent over 2004, with notable increases in the indices of Accommodation (+7.39 percent); Entertainment and culture (+4.57 percent); and Restaurant service (+4.16 percent).

Consumption structure of the 1999/2000-based quarterly Tourist Price Index (TPI) is obtained from the Visitor Expenditure Survey. The representative goods and services of the TPI ?asket?are selected according to the percentage share of each item in the total expenditure.

TPI is used to reflect the price change of the goods and services purchased by visitors in order to measure the real change of visitors?expenditure.
