Tax on Silk Yarn from China to be Cut

Talking to reporters, he said the National Textile Corporation (NTC) would supply the yarn to weavers at a subsidised rate after importing it from China.

He said the previous BJP government had increased the tax on the imported silk to 30 per cent from eight per cent. Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram had now agreed to roll back the tax to the old level, he added.

Elangovan said the office of the National Textile Committee here, which was ordered to close by the previous government at the Centre, would continue to function.

He said Congress leaders, headed by Veerappa Moily, had met DMK president M Karunanidhi and held discussions on the number of seats to be contested by the party for the coming Assembly election.

AICC president Sonia Gandhi would also speak to the DMK chief on the seat-sharing issue, he added.

He thanked Railway Minister Lalu Prasad for presenting a 'good budget', introducing 11 new trains to Tamil Nadu and allotting funds for gauge conversion between Erode and Sathyamangalam.
