Swaziland: Increased Cultivation to Re-Vamp Textile Industry

Minister of Agriculture and Co-operatives Mtiti Fakudze has stated that the cotton industry was in the process of recovering.

The Minister suggested that vacant government land can be turned into cotton farms.

Government land measuring over 10,000 hectares next to Ndzevane in Big Bend is very fertile and it can be used for cotton farming, said Fakudze.

The textile industry of the country will be able to buy cotton locally.

Cotton is presently imported from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique by many textile factories, he said.

Cotton ginnery at Lavumisa would be made use of, said the Minister.

He said the seeds could be used to make other products like animal feed and cooking oil.

An in house facility can be created locally, right from farming of cotton to making of fabric and using seeds to produce other products, he said.

He further expressed his gratitude to the management of Tex-Ray Textile was lauded for taking the initiative to revamp the cotton industry and opening a textile factory in the country, by the Minister.
