Portuguese textile and clothing industry registered exports worth Euro4.118 billion recording a 6.7 percent fall in 2005, compared to 2004 at Euro4.118 billion.

Clothing sector posted the highest decrease with export worth Euro2,556 billion in 2005, registering a 9.8 percent drop compared to 2004, stated CENESTAP Textile Observatory.

Synthetic and artificial segment of the textile industry recorded an increase of 27 percent.

Special and tufted cloth increased 20.6 percent and impregnated cloth rose 8.6 percent, on year on year basis.

President of Portuguese Textiles and Clothing Association (ATP), Paulo Nunes de Almeida said a 7.5 percent fall had been forecast beginning of 2005 but performance remained satisfactory due hard efforts of Portuguese and European sector companies.

European Union and China entered into an agreement to restrict imports of Chinese goods into the European market, which is the main destination for Portuguese textile and clothing products, Almeida pointed.
