China: Proposal to Form Asian Apparel Federation

Write: Danior [2011-05-20]

China has presented a proposal to create a regional apparel federation consisting of apparel exporting countries of Asia.

This federation will help further develop and take maximum advantage of the trade opportunities created post-textile quotas.

Experts from all the Asian countries including the least developed countries (LDCs), are considering the pros and cons of this proposals.

Several analysts believe that China is aiming to unite all the Asian apparel exporters so that they have a better chance of negotiating with the US and the EU if any restriction or policy is implemented.

China is currently the world? largest apparel exporter with over US $400 billion worth of exports around the world.

However, experts believe that China might be trying to build a platform with a motive of immobilizing the negotiating strength of the emerging apparel exporting nations, which are actually its rivals in the international market.

Smaller nations like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and the Philippines are also rapidly emerging as major apparel exporters.

A round table meet has been organized in Beijing on Tuesday, where representatives from many chief apparel exporting countries will be present.
