India: Textile and Clothing Exports to Knock $15 Bln Mark

India? textile and clothing exports are about to transcend $15 billion limit this fiscal after achieving $13.04 billion in last fiscal.

Post-quota regime in textiles opened up important markets like the US and the EU, informs a source from the Textile Ministry.

Country? textile export composed of fibre, yarns, fabrics, made-ups, garments, handicrafts including carpets, handloom and jute earned the country $12,326.66 million during the first nine months of fiscal 2005-06, against $9873.37 million in the corresponding months of the 2004-05 fiscal.

Textile exports normally grew at the rate of 22 percent during April-March 2005, while in April-November 2005 it amounted to $9.3 billion, growing at the rate of 8.2 percent compared to same period in 2004, says Textile Ministry as per Directorate General Of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics (DGCI&S) information.

Recent DGCI&S data indicates that textile exports had amounted to $12.33 billion during the period April-December 2005 that was 24.85 percent higher than the exports during the corresponding period of 2004.

India exports 65 percent of textile products to the US and the EU; exports to the US grew at 26 percent and that to the EU by 20 percent during January to September, 2005.

Wool exports for the period of April-December 2005 earned $59.20 million in foreign exchange showing a growth of 23 percent while carpets exports amounted $788.41 gaining 33 percent.

Man made filament yarn however, declined 6.26 percent even as man made staple fibre increased by mere 2.75 percent during April?ecember 2004.

Cotton exports surged 19 percent at $1924.95 million during the period under consideration against $1621.28 million compared to same period last year.
