The Department of Science and Technology has sanctioned a project on 'preparation, characterisation and performance study of solid lubricant and wear resistance surface coating on textile machinery components,' to Bharathiar University (BU) in Coimbatore.

The department had identified some traditional crafts for improvement and rejuvenation using plasma technology and textile industry has chosen in the Southern region, a BU release said here today.

The project was to enhance the performance of textile machinery components, using thermal plasma surface coatings of machinery parts, it said.

Under the Rs.37 lakh project, using sufrace coatings and solid lubricants, wear resistance of components and friction on the surfaces, would be reduced to enhance the life of components and improve the quality of textiles.

Dr P V A Padmanabhan, Scientific Officer, laser and plasma technology division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai and Dr Krishna M Gupt, Prof.Department of metallurgical engineering and material sciences, IIT, Mubai would be the consultants for the project, the release added.
