The Academy opened its Department of Textile Art shortly after its establishment. In 1980, a fashion design specialty was initiated, and the Department of Fashion Design was founded in 1984. The two departments were merged into the Department of Textile & Fashion Design in 1990.
Thanks to decades' teaching practice, the department has developed a complete teaching system with unique features. At present, offering two specialties in textile design and fashion design. Students will obtain strong theoretical attainments and overall design capability and grasp techniques of craft manufacture in the area, along with modern business operation and management philosophy.
Over the years, the department has laid stress on the need to relate theory to reality and maintained close contact with enterprises. With strong academic atmosphere, it conducts frequent international exchanges. It has made significant and students from the department have attended many professional exhibitions and contests both a home and abroad, winning honor for the school and the country.

Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University always making a point of fostering the students' innovation spirit and ability, keeps expanding the students' horizon to improve their comprehensive quality, while strengthening teaching of fundamental major courses. At the Academy, great attention is paid to the students of fine heritage of folk arts of all nationalities both at home and abroad. It advocates the spirit of being precise in pursuing studies, relating theory to pratice and seeking truth from fact, and stress the need to suit design to lives, and the combination of design and craft manufacture, and that of art and science.Students are trained to acutely grasp the changing trend and pace of social and culture life. The Academy strives to creat lively academic atmosphere and fine education enviroment.
The Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University is authorized to award master and doctoral degrees in Theory of Arts and Design and Theory of Arts, with a postdoctoral specialty in Theory of Art. Since China embarked on its reform and opening policy, faculty and students at the Academy has achieved remarkable achievements in major art design activities both at home and abroad and successfully completed over 200 national and international major art design projects, winning more than 300 domestic and international awards. The Academy has published a total of over 300 textbooks and monographs, and has more than 100 features teaching specialties and teaching materials in the form of audio-visual lectures broadcasted at CCTV and Beijing TV Station.At present,it is applying for a major experimental base of humanities and social sciences of the country.
At present, the Academy comprises three sections:design,fine arts and arts & history, along with the Research Institutes and the School of Adult Education. The Academy has a pool of celebrated art educationists, artists, and scholars.
Currently, it has 194 teachers, among whom there are 51 professors (18 advisers for doctoral candidates), and 84 associate professors. It boasts strong faculty,complete teaching facilities and advanced experimental means.
Following the university's overall planning on building a world-class university, the Academy will keep up and carry forward the features and advantages in art and design disciplines of the former Central Academy of Arts & Design,striving to build itself into a world-class academy of fine arts with distinct features.
