THE textile industry in Europe is not doomed to vanish beneath a flood of imports from overseas, so declare the 22 workers at Sew Mon in Anglesey.
Their company was founded by two textile workers when their former employer, QCM clothing, moved production to Russia. They are adamant that the secret to survival and success is not to compete on cost but to invest in the creation of the most highly skilled workforce possible.
Sew Mon has recently won a heavy-duty clothing contract for the NHS, which it will fulfil alongside work for London fashion, Minki.
They are now investing in new machinery to offer a broader range of services.
To increase the versatility of staff, they have signed on to classes in pattern construction run by the Assembly Government-organised Skills in the Workplace programme with the Welsh Clothing and Textile Association and Coleg Llandrillo.
