The one-year extension of anti-dumping duties is negated by 15 EU member countries. EU leaders decided to levy 16.5 percent of anti-dumping duties on Chinese import shoes in October 2006. France and Italy support for the anti-dumping duty teeth and nail. EU also decided to impose 10 percent of anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese shoes. At that time, members agreed that valid period of anti-dumping duties is two years, instead of the usual 5 years. However, the practice of extending the duties was rejected. It means that Council of Europe must make a decision before the maturity of anti-dumping duties (that is on October 8).
European retailers and consumer organizations welcomes this development. Jan Eggert, come from Foreign Trade Association, said that this is a good result for the European importers, retailers and European consumers. Anti-dumping tariffs have been levied for 2 years, and it is a long time. Anti-dumping tariffs don’t help anyone. Consumers now face the pressure of high prices, that is, food and energy price pressures, but they must also pay the bill for anti-dumping duties in long-term.
European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson's spokesman said that the EU authorities are considering the upcoming review of anti-dumping duties.
