China: Fujian tanners failed to meet new environmental standards

Tanners in the Fujian province of China have been failed to pass the recent environmental assessment conducted by the local environmental protection agency.

Results so far show that eight major tanneries in Quanzhou in the south east of the province failed to meet the standard of their effluent discharge. However, the tanneries have pointed out that they only recently moved to a new location in the Jinjiang Andong Industrial Area and are still adjusting their effluent treatment.

The China Leather Industry Association has said that the authorities have already closed down tanneries in Guangdong province.
