China: Hats off to Polo

If you thought polo fashion was all about polo shirts, the Royal Salute Polo Gold Cup, held in Zhejiang province recently, showed that it is actually about women in elaborate hats and colorful accessories.

There were plenty of wide-brimmed hats, some made of silk, at this high-profile event that saw Torquhil Ian Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll, among other dignitaries, in attendance.

Black and white were the basic hues, with the feathers decorating the hats adding a touch of color. Some hats had wide ribbons tied into big butterfly knots, while others sported giant silk flowers.

Plenty of high-end accessories - from bracelets, to diamond earrings and necklaces - were on view. Short leather gloves, thin waist belts and high-heeled shoes, completed the look of sophistication and style.

For men, dotted and striped ties underscored the formality of the occasion. But not all were in formal suits; some came to the event wearing Scottish kilts.
