Vietnam's shoe exports dropped by 15.8% in 2009 to US$4bn after the sector was hit by lower orders due to the global economic crisis and EU anti-dumping duties.
Figures from the General Statistics Office, show Vietnam's footwear exports to the EU shrank 23%, while shipments to Japan were down 10.5% and to the US fell 2%.
Despite EU's recent decision to continue the anti-dumping taxes on leather footwear for another year, Vietnam hopes its exports will rise to US$6.2bn in 2010 and US$11.4bn by 2015.
