The country's veterinary authorities sent an immediate notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on Friday, 2 June. One animal was affected.
According to the report, the University of Hong Kong isolated the virus A/Swine/Hong Kong/201/2010 from one sample taken from a pig on 7 January 2010 during routine surveillance at the local slaughterhouse. The virus was essentially a swine influenza virus but had picked up a pandemic H1N1 gene by genetic reassortment. Ante-mortem inspection did not pick up any abnormal signs from this pig and those from the same batch.
Although the cause of the outbreak has not yet been confirmed and remains under investigation, the issue has now been resolved.
The government has stepped up inspection of live pigs and continues to closely monitor the health condition of pigs on local pig farms.
