Three Tokyo supermarkets are showcasing fresh Irwin mangos -- Japanese consumers' favorite mango variety -- among the various Taiwanese fruit in the promotion, a Council of Agriculture (COA) official said Friday.
The fair will be held in three sessions in the supermarket section of three different department stores of the Keio chain in the Japanese capital.
The first two-day session opened July 1, the second will take place July 7-8 and the third session will be held July 14-15.
It is hoped the promotions will once again trigger a fever for Taiwanese mangoes in Japan after the fruit captured the hearts of Japanese consumers in 2007.
According to government export statistics, Japan is the major market for Taiwanese fruit. In 2009, Taiwan shipped US$20.18 million-worth of fresh fruit to Japan, accounting for 47 percent of the country's total fresh fruit exports for that year.
Japan was also the largest market for Taiwanese mangoes, to which Taiwan shipped 993 tons in 2009, accounting for 22 percent of Taiwan's total mango exports for that year, reported focustaiwan.tw
Taiwan exported US$9.48 million-worth of mangoes to overseas markets last year, 60 percent of which went to Japan.
