China has overtaken the US as Peru's top export destination. Experts are hopeful this will boost the country's total export figures after a fall of 15% last year.
Juan Carlos Mathews, export director at the government s trade promotion agency Promperu, said the Chinese demand will help to increase the country's exports by 17% to $31.6 billion after last year's decline. He also sees a possible rise in exports of 9% next year.
China's position as top export destination for Peruvian products has aided by a free-trade agreement which was signed in 2009, according to Mr Mathews. China overtook the US in July with 17% of Peru's exports compared to 16.8 for the US. China has increased it's purchases of fruit and other products.
We ve found an alternative market at a time of global crisis, Mathews said. The Asian market has been one of the ways out.
