The authorities in Shanghai have ordered fruit vendors to stop selling oranges that are believed to have been dyed with a toxic industrial wax. The Oriental Morning Post says tests have been ordered on the suspect oranges, after people complained that their hands turned red after contact with the fruit.
The newspaper said the dye was used to make the oranges look fresher so vendors could sell them at higher prices. Industrial dyes have been linked to memory loss, respiratory problems and damage to the immune system.
