Chengdu municipal government said on Monday that the city had been named by the Ministry of Agriculture as one of China's first pilot units to promote modern agriculture.
The city is the sole candidate of the project among the 15 sub-provincial cities in the country.
According to a document by the ministry on the project, Chengdu will focus its efforts on upgrading the production of rice, hogs, vegetables and aquatic products in its area by introducing modern management, standardized and collective production and brandpromoting strategies.
It is expected that the city's agriculture will realize a GDP of RMB 53 billion by 2015, while the annual per capita income for its rural population will reach RMB13, 000.
