City management wins high mark

Chengdu ranks one of the seven best-managed cities in the Chinese mainland, according to a report publicized at the Scientifi c Development of China Cities Forum, which concluded in Beijing this week.

The report was a result of the appraisal by leading Chinese scholars and experts in their comprehensive study of major cities in China, which included Chengdu, Dalian, Zhongshan, Huai'an, Yangzhou, Weihai and Jiujiang in the list of "examples of commendable city management", with Chengdu being the only candidate in western China.

Experts said that Chengdu won credits in the appraisal for its achievements in balanced development in rural and urban areas and its experiments in managing mechanism in recent years.

The forum was sponsored by departments of Ministry of Civil Affairs, Xinhua News Agency, Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, Peking University and Tsinghua University. 63 indices were applied for the analysis for the report, covering a wide range of low-carbon economy, life quality, living environments, public services, transportation, policy transparency, recreational activities and comprehensive management.
