Chengdu Civil Affairs Bureau announced on Monday the plan for the establishment of 35 outdoor emergency shelters around the city, which are expected to be completed by the end of September.
The 35 emergency shelters, with a total capacity of 1.1 million people, are designed mainly for the purpose to provide temporary residence for people when disasters strike, according to offi cials from the bureau, who said that the blueprints for such shelters had been approved and the construction of some sites had been launched on Friday. A total of RMB160 million will be invested in the construction of the
shelters.
The 35 shelters generally fi nd their locations in fi ve downtown districts, inclusive the Hi-tech
zone, of Chengdu, and shelters in the districts of Wenjiang, Longquanyi, Xindu and Qingbaijiang will also be set up.
According to the plan, every shelter will be equipped with functional facilities, such as those for residence, storing, garbage disposal, evacuation and water supply. At some shelters, including the Huanghuaxi Park, areas for the landing and take-off of helicopters will be allocated.
