China to promote new energy vehicles
China will promote the use of 20,000 new energy vehicles for public transportation by the end of this year, according to a report released by the Ministry of Science and Technology last week.
The report said that by 2015, China will have over 1 million new energy vehicles, and by 2020, the number will grow to 10-100 million.
It also mentioned that by 2011, China will have a production capacity of 150,000 such vehicles and key parts.
Last year, the country had 5,000 varieties of new energy vehicles. Over 70 new models have since hit the market.
So far, China has earmarked 970 million yuan to subsidize new energy vehicles, said Zhang Laiwu, vice minister of the ministry.
