Steelmakers in China's east-central Henan Province are beginning to feel the effect of the nationwide drive to save energy and cut emissions. They have been told to halve output in the rest of this year.
Anyang Steel, a major local mill, has shut down two blast furnaces (400 cubic meters each) over the past two days.
The provincial government has cut the supply of electricity to most local mills that are now operating at 55 percent of their normal capacity.
Crude steel output in Henan accounted for roughly 4 percent of the country's total last year.
