Replacing grade II rebar with grade III may reduce steel consumption by at least 20 percent, which means to save 20 million tons of steel, 32 million to 35 million tons of iron ore and 14 million tons coal per year.
China produced 122 million tons of rebar last year, mainly grade II and III. Grade II rebar is supposed to make up 80 percent of the domestic supply.
But in the first-tier cities of East China like Shanghai, the use of grade III rebar has accounted for half of the total supplies.
By comparison, the application of high-grade rebar has reached up to 80 percent to 90 percent in advanced nations such as Britain, Germany, Australia and Japan.
