Since a nationwide geological survey was conducted 12 years ago, China has discovered five billion tons of iron ore, 38 million tons of cooper, 450 million tons of bauxite, 1,800 tons of gold, 83 million tons of lead and zinc, 80,000 tons of silver ore, 180 million tons of manganese ore, 750,000 tons of tungsten ore and 2.6 million tons of tin ore.

In the next five years, the country will identify 1,500 mineral-bearing areas for further exploration, try to uncover 500 plots rich in uranium, iron, copper and aluminum, make an assessment of growth potential for 12 essential minerals including manganese, nickel, tin, chrome and molybdenum, and conduct geological survey on 19 ore-forming belts notably in China's west.
