Pineapple exports from Panama will arrive next year in Russia, Turkey, and possibly Japan and other markets in Asia. Thanks to a commitment, made during a recent International Trade Fair held in Berlin (Germany), informed a source from the Panamanian government.
The National Director for Export Promotion of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Panama, Ramiro Franceschi, told Xinhua in the Panamanian capital, that the commitment was made at Fruit Logistica, held in Germany last month.
He explained that nine Panamanian employers promised to increase pineapple exportations for 2012 by almost eight million boxes, at a price of US$7 per box, which will represent an income of US$56 million.
Production will mean, according to the official, an opportunity for pineapple producers of the sector of La Chorrera, west of Panam City (in the capital province of Panam), and the province of Chiriqu, located in the west and bordering with Costa Rica.
Franceschi said that the agreements were signed on the occasion of the fair between buyers and Panamanian producers. The Director of Export Promotion added that buyers will come as from next week to Panam, to visit plantations and to complete the contracts.
He explained that it will be necessary to plant more pineapples, which are also produced in the Panamanian northern province of Bocas del Toro. It is estimated, according to the official, that last year Panam exported about US$30 million in pineapples. "We hope with these efforts - at an international level- to double in the next few years the amount of fruit sent abroad" he said.
