The banana market, which tripped up Fresh Del Monte Produce, appears to be being more kind to rival Fyffes, which has pushed through price rises that its US rival has struggled with. Ireland-based Fyffes - which itself suffered a banana setback a year ago, when poor weather depressed demand said that it had seen "improved market conditions" later in 2010.
"The group achieved necessary increases in selling prices in its key markets during the second half of the year," David McCann, the Fyffes chairman said, adding that the trend had spread into 2011 too. "Selling prices in the banana category have been higher year on year in the first two months- reflecting the impact of supply constraints due to adverse weather conditions in the main production regions."
